We are in our early days of operating our BlueROV2 and we took it out for a test and recorded several videos.
Some were done through cockpit standalone software and some were taken through the 192.168.2.2 interface.
We cant find the videos, can anyone tell us the default location for the files or even what format theh are saved in so we might find them?
Videos recorded in Cockpit are stored onboard your computer, not on the vehicle!
For those recorded in the standalone Cockpit, those show up in your user’s home folder, under Cockpit (alongside Documents, Downloads, etc.)
For those recorded in the browser extension, you’ll need to connect the vehicle, open the Cockpit interface, and process / download the videos from the video library within Cockpit.
They will download as .mkv videos with .ass subtitle files, you can transcode these to MP4 and “burn in” the telemetry subtitle files if you like.
Recently we performed a dive with a BlueROV and were able to record the video through cockpit’s browser extension. After the dive we downloaded the .mkv and the .ass from the video library in the extension onto our topside laptop.
Allthough my question is:
Where do the video’s get stored for the extension version of Cockpit? We later tried reaching the Video Library on a different laptop, but the video library appeared to be empty?
Also I’m wondering what things from the cockpit extension get stored into the browsers cache, cookies etc. Because it also seems when browser cache and cookies are deleted, a few BlueOS and Cockpit related things will be resetted. (Such as dark modes, some view / joystick configurations in Cockpit etc.)
Was my previous response not clear in this thread?
The videos are stored on your computer when using the extension version of Cockpit, but you have to have a vehicle connected to view them - a bit of a pain! That is one reason, among many, that we recommend the standalone version of Cockpit over the extension. We’re even considering branding the extension version as “Cockpit Lite” because it fundamentally can’t support some features, like using the controller with the Cockpit window not selected or visible…
When it comes to browser settings, clearing your cache and cookies does indeed affect the interface. They should not affect Cockpit joystick configurations though! If Cockpit presents you with a settings conflict, choosing “Use values from BlueOS” means it will use what was stored on the vehicle, where “Use values from Cockpiit” will use the settings last saved locally in your browser or Cockpit electron session. This approach is still buggy, but a big fix for it is coming soon!
Thank you so much for the extended explanation!
I was just wondering how we didn’t get to see the video’s on the other laptop with the extension, but it makes sense now!
We’ll definitely migrate towards the standalone version of Cockpit for sure.
