Interaction between QGroundControl and Pixhawk

How does the joystick interact with the pixhawk and the QGroundControl? I need to know because I want to make an addition to the source code to add another component.

QGroundControl reads the joystick input, and sends the information to the pixhawk via the MANUAL_CONTROL message at regular intervals.
