I’m currently working on a project using the BlueBoat hull design and I’m trying to bring the hull geometry into a naval architecture workflow analysis in Maxsurf Modeler.
My current workflow is downloading the BlueBoat model from the website, importing the .step file into inventor, exporting a .iges file from inventor and importing this file into MaxSurf Modeler.
However, when I import into Maxsurf Modeler some of the hull geometry is missing/incomplete.
Has anyone had any luck with importing this into Maxsurf Modeler?
Hi @AColg1 -
I’ve never heard of that software, it sounds cool! If you’re successful it would be interesting to learn what your analysis showed.
I’ve struggled with the model similarly - due to the nature of the export, the hulls themselves are not “watertight” meshes, and so cad software struggle with it - in Onshape it still opens, but I’ve not been able to repair the mesh. You could try opening a .step of just a hull export in a program like meshlab, and see if you can close any holes and fix the geometry from there?
I’ll also look into exporting a hull without this issue from the source file - it may be a challenge given how well Solidworks and I typically get along.
Hi @AColg1 -
I took a look at the source document, and while it is a valid part file, apparently SolidWorks can cheat when exporting to other formats and make things non-manifold. I’ve attached a .stl here that may be better than the part you’re currently extracting, but this looks like the best we’ll be able to offer, without remodeling the part in another CAD software entirely!
Best of luck, let us know if you get results! BB120-HULL.STL (4.5 MB)
