Waiting For Video Connection

I have read all previous posts regarding same issue but still uncertain, so I thought of describing the error with the hope someone can help.
My last dive back in Oct '24 everything was working fine, today I was just firing it up for a check when the message came up ‘waiting for video connection’ appeared.
The following is what I have
1/Q Ground version v3.2.4 Rev 6
2/Battery above 15v
3/ laptop updated today
4/ I don’t believe I’ve updated the ROV since assembling back in 2020, it doesn’t use the BlueOS as mine is the original.
Would appreciate some advice

Hi @ROVoz
You could double check the camera hardware functions by plugging it into your laptop directly, and opening the webcam app for your OS.. This would require taking the enclosure tube off and unplugging it from the Raspberry Pi USB port.
You should be able to select the USB camera (usually the switch camera button to swap from the laptop’s built-in camera.)
Is the other telemetry like ROV battery voltage and orientation coming through? Can you ping 192.168.2.2 from the terminal successfully?

Hi Tony and thanks for assisting,
Other than the ‘waiting for connection’ notification on the QGround program there is the normal A/H on the right of the scree and I can’t get any info from the ROV at all. it’s not getting anything from the ROV yet it started up with correct 5 burst 3 quick beeps and 2 long.
May I ask what you mean by ‘can you ping 192.168.2.2 from the terminal? If its can i get it from the laptop the answer oddly enough is no.
As mine doesn’t use BlueOS can someone explain how to update ROV because I’ve read the Update section and for the life of me I can’t seem to find where to start. Yep, I built it which is why I’m stumped

Hi @ROVoz -
It’s likely you’re not communicating with the ROV at all! The beeps are a good sign that at least the Pixhawk is working.
Is the “Link” light illuminated on your FXTI topside box, and on the ROV fathom x (located on port side near front, should see two green lights)
If not - your tether could be damaged or not connected properly.
If you do see the lights, verify you’ve setup your network adapter correctly and follow all the steps in the setup guide (R3 version to match your hardware linked)

Thanks Tony, yes my topside unit has 2 green lights, so it’s great to that point. I doubt the ROV has been update since 2020 at least and it runs the old system. I have tried following instructions per web site but I’m not sure which “update” to follow to be honest. Are you able to explain please?

Hi @ROVoz
You likely need to configure your computer’s network settings, as detailed in the link to the setup guide above. Those instructions are the correct ones to use for your older ROV.

Thanks Tony, really appreciate your input :+1:

Hi Tony, on the laptop now and have check connection to Ethernet 2 and it seems fine.
I’m still a little lost how to actually update QGround please?

Hi @ROVoz -
You should be using QGC version 4.2.8, not a newer version - you’ll always see the “update” message on startup but that’s the price you pay for running old hardware and not updating the software!

If you open the terminal program in windows, and type

ping 192.168.2.2
you should see pings successfully completing if you’ve done your network setup correctly. If not, your ethernet adapter that corresponds to the USB connection from the FXTI has not been configured!

I am having the very same problems! I used my ROV a few weeks ago and all was good, but now get what the OP stated. The network settings are the same as before. Should the blue LED light on top in the E enclosure be blinking?

Using correct Q version and did a ping 192.168.2.2 and it timed out. Also have two gree lights on the FXTI blue box.

Why are we pinging 192.186.2.2 when the network iP is set to 192.168.2.1? I also have a Sonoptix to configure after this problem is solved. All of this worked last month, including the sonar, then when I turned on today is when the Not Connected problem started. Could a new Windows update in the middle of the night cause a problem. I am using Windows 11 and hate it!

Hi Tony, the network setup should’ve changed, I hadn’t done anything. Like others here, it worked fine earlier and now suddenly it’s not even though the ROV is starting up correctly.
What if I uninstall the update I didn’t want? Or what if I uninstall QGround and start the whole network setup again? Surely there must be an easier solution Tony?
You mentioned the FXTI wasn’t configured, may I ask how I configure it again? Or reverse it?
It could have lost connection when the ROV was accidentally linked to the internet I guess after last dive, I certainly never asked for the update.

My input re Windows up - I did one hoping it fixed the issue, sadly nothing changed :man_shrugging:

Hi @ROVoz and @bajaMike -
I don’t believe the ROV is to blame, or even the software on it! Please share screenshots of how your network adapters are configured, per the instructions I linked. We set the control computer to 192.168.2.1, and by default the ROV address is 192.168.2.2. No two devices can share the same IP address. If your network adapter is not configured with an IP address on the same subnet, you’ll never be able to ping or otherwise communicate with the system. Plugging the FXTI into different USB ports, or Windows updating, can make it lose the IP configuration you may have setup in the past and had working…
Sorry for the frustration!

Ok, standby one

Thanks @ROVoz -
That seems like you have the configuration correct - assuming that interface disappears when you disconnect the USB cable going to the FXTI? It’s suspicious no packets are moving across the interface…

Can you confirm two green lights are present on both the FXTI blue box, as well as the port side at the front of the ROV? One indicates power, and the other link between the ROV and FXTI - a requirement for things to work.

I also notice you show both the newer windows network configuration, as well as the classic control panel interface. We’ve seen issues with Windows screwing this up and getting conflicts - so resetting your configuration in both, and then only configuring in the classic interface as the instructions detail may fix things.

Best of luck!

Hi Tony and understood rectifying the Windows config. Yes 2 Green lights are on the FXTI blue box and have attached pics of other lights on the ROV
What version should the ROV be running understanding its old?

Can you explain to this dumbo (lol) what you mean by “assuming that interface disappears when you disconnect the USB going to the FXTI and it’s suspicious no packets are moving across the interface” please, just not 100% sure what you mean
FYI - at the time of those screen pics Tony I had turned the internet off, is that what you were referring to?
