Tether Spool Slip Ring to Bulk Head Wires breaking

Sudden problem that is becoming after every use is the very fine wires from the slip ring to bulkhead connector keep snapping off at the solder joint. I notice there is a warning about these parts being assembled in a certain way but cant find any instructions. Sometimes one wire is broken then other times five. I have examined the slip ring but it appears to function ok I think. Was thinking that the slip ring was snagging and twisting off the wires but would expect all of them to be off.

Any tips or ideas what the problem may be or is it poor quality wire?

Hi @Stanna,

Sorry to hear you’re having issues with one of our products.

Could you share some pictures of what you’re referring to? As I understand it the slip ring wires should be contained and not under load, so unless the wires have been pre-weakened (e.g. from some overly deep insulation stripping) and/or are going through a lot of vibration, I’m not sure how or why they’d be breaking.

This may be worth reporting as a product problem, so you can sort things out with our support team and so we can track the issue (in case it recurs elsewhere, and needs to be addressed with design changes).

Thanks for the response.

I had the same concerns about over stripping and also possibly too much heat when soldering. I have just resoldered 3 more wires, two of which came off whilst soldering the initial breakage.

I am willing to accept my skills may not be up to the task but am wondering if this is an issue that others have suffered to try and narrow down what the cause is. The wires are very thin. I am considering adding a thicker gauge to make the solder connection on the connector to give a bit more purchase. Any thoughts appreaciated.

Yeah, thin cables can definitely be tricky to strip without nicking the wire(s).

There needs to be one good joint to each thin wire. Adding extra lengths of other wire could help, but may also just be more things to manage.

If you’ve got enough length available on the slip ring cables, it may help to strip a fair amount and double it over, then twist that together, so the solder has a bit more to grab onto?

If you do decide to add some other wire in between I’d suggest soldering that onto the connector first, or clamping it once it’s soldered onto the slip ring wire, so the connection to the slip ring doesn’t get pulled on / experience undue stresses.

Thanks. I will give that a go and see how it goes.
