We’re evaluating the Lumen Subsea Light for an industrial inspection ROV.
The specifications state a maximum operating temperature of 55°C in air, and note that the light runs much cooler underwater, but we couldn’t find a maximum operating temperature for continuous submerged operation.
Our application involves industrial inspections in hot water, potentially up to 75–80°C, at depths of approximately 100 m.
Could you advise:
What is the maximum recommended water temperature for continuous operation?
Has the Lumen Subsea Light been tested in elevated water temperatures?
Any guidance or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated.
Blue Robotics hasn’t conducted any high-temperature testing, but generally the Lumen just reduces brightness in order to avoid overheating. I’d recommend testing a lumen in your application, and seeing if the performance is sufficient - it may be dimmer than normal but if you’re in an industrial tank it may not require much light?
Noting that the firmware starts this reduction when the processor temperature reaches 60℃, up to a hardcoded 75℃ maximum (programmed as 0% output), so if you’re in those kinds of temperatures for any consistent period the default Lumen firmware is unlikely to work well for you.
You could compile a custom firmware with different thermal limits, but that will presumably make it more likely for the electronics to fail
