Introducing the 3" and 4" Locking Watertight Enclosures!

We are proud to present, the new 3″ and 4″ Watertight Enclosure Series!

The watertight enclosure series has been a part of our product line since the early days – the 3″ and 4″ series are a key component of the BlueROV2, and over the years, we’ve seen them used anywhere and everywhere, from dropcams and camera systems of all shapes and sizes, as laser scalers, and integrated into countless bespoke vehicles. As with all of our products, the community was pushing the enclosures to their limits, and it was time to take this product line to the next level!

A BlueROV2 equipped with several additional WTEs, designed to survey scallop populations with AI!

We released the 2″ Locking Series back in 2019, and in preparation for the larger enclosures, we released the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) back in February. Both of these launches paved the way for the next generation of tubes and flanges!

A Single Configurator

We’ve combined the 2″, 3″, and 4″ Series into a single configurator – check out the expanded product page!

Locking Cord + Anti Rotation Feature

The locking cord means that the enclosure is more secure and has less risk of an end cap coming off, even if some pressure builds up inside the tube. The locking cord is made of plastic and can be inserted into a machined chamber between the tube and the flange, retaining the flange to the tube so that they cannot be separated. The tubes have a slot machined at each end that provides access to insert and remove the locking cord – that slot doubles as the mating point for a key that is machined into the flange. Rotating the flanges is not possible!

Precision Machined O-ring Interface

We’ll continue to offer tubes made of acrylic and aluminum, but now the inner ends are precision machined so that despite wide tolerances on the raw plastic material, the O-ring interface is always manufactured to tight tolerances! The tubes are rated from 70m to 950m and are available in several sizes. Please note we will no longer offer custom tube lengths due to the machined ends! The second generation flanges are anodized aluminum and include dual radial O-rings and a face seal O-ring for reliable high-pressure sealing, a locking cord gland, and an anti-rotation feature.

Compatible Endcaps

All of the end-caps are cross-compatible between locking and non-versions! As with the tubes and the flanges, all of the 2″, 3″, and 4″ end caps (and flange caps!) are contained within a single product page. You’re also welcome to fabricate your own custom end caps!

We can’t wait to see what you enclosure in your enclosures! Show us your vehicles and projects by tagging us on social media or sharing in the community forums!

Will the previous WTE components still be available?

Hi @model14,

We’re only manufacturing the new locking design going forwards, but there’s a small amount of leftover stock of some of the previous components in the Dings and Dents category.

EDIT: See updated response below.

Well, since I am only working in shallow fresh water now, and as just a hobby, I will have to start sourcing parts elsewhere, or make my own as best I can. Your parts are now clearly geared to meeting the requirements of the deep-water commercial market, and I guess it is not economically viable to continue to provide product for the amateur builder. That’s really a shame. Kinda the way the world is going, isn’t it?

Rusty has responded to a chunk of this here

In addition,

That’s quite a relative term. Oil rigs (and presumably military uses) can go significantly deeper than even the highest rated products we provide, and the low-volume top end of the market is not something we aim to directly be part of.

Amateur builders and hobbyists are definitely still one of our target markets, and form the basis of and inlet to this awesome community that we’re working to foster.

That said, things are definitely getting more expensive (from materials, to logistics, to people). As we (as a company) and the general marine robotics community mature there are also higher expectations for robustness and consistency, which we need to meet both to maintain trust in our company, and to continue enabling the future of marine exploration (which is our mission).

To achieve that we’re dedicating significant research and design efforts to reducing costs and improving functionalities, but that unfortunately doesn’t grant us immunity to the rising tide of costs worldwide - it’s rather the tools we use to try to keep that tide at bay.

Elliot, thank you for the informative and thoughtful reply.

It is fantastic to see these new tube designs and we are excited to start using them! I pulled the STEP files for the locking tubes/flanges into our CAD system and it looks like there is an error with the 4" Flange files.

I downloaded the WTE4-M-LOCKING-FLANGE-SEAL-R1 (.zip) file from the product page and imported the STEP file, but the parts looks to be for the 3" series flange, not the 4" series flange. The STEP file is named with the 4" series naming, but the actual parts are for the 3" series. Are you able to provide the files for the 4" series flange?

Great to hear it!

I’ve just confirmed that this is indeed the case, and have brought it up internally to get the correct file uploaded instead. I’ll confirm once that’s been fixed

Following up - this should be fixed now

Awesome! Thanks for getting this fixed and I now have the correct files  Time to start design work!!

I couldn’t find this information easily, but I think it’s probably on the forums somewhere already: do you have plans to update the 6" and 8" to this new format as well? If so, when do you plan to release these?

Hi @bartarts,

We are planning to update the 6" and 8" enclosures to the locking series (and introduce a new 5" size), but don’t have a fixed release date yet. They should be released some time next year - hopefully somewhere around Q3, depending on other priorities

Thanks for the info! I’ll be looking forward to them.

For my application, I was hoping to get the 4in series enclosure with a 100m length tube, I didn’t see that option the the product page. Is there somewhere I can get custom lengths or would I have to fabricate the tube myself?

Hi @vedanth18! Welcome to the community

Because of the nature of the locking feature, we aren’t able to offer custom lengths. I’m sorry for the news!

Revising my earlier response to this, we’ve ended up deciding to continue providing the existing (non-locking) WTE flanges. The tubes have been discontinued though - equivalents will need to be sourced externally.
