Hi all,
contemplating here about the possibility of extending the depth rating of the ping sonar and newton gripper using an oil compensation system. Anyone had any experience with that?
Basic design would be a small bladder comp with an oil line going into the arm/sonar enclosure through a small penetrator.
For the sonar I’m wondering if filling the pcb compartment with oil and only compensating this part will do the job, considering that the head has oil filled already (I assume) and has little flexibility, or a pass through hole can be also drilled between the pcb compartment and the sonar head.
I would be happy to hear any experienced feedback.
Hi @odedezra,
This isn’t something I’ve tried, but from a quick look at the relevant internals:
- I can’t immediately see anything pressure-sensitive in the Ping360
- the head is indeed already oil-filled
- There might be issues with the electrolytic capacitor can in the gripper
- If either device is using a WetLink penetrator it may be pertinent to epoxy seal the cable on one or both ends to avoid oil getting pushed through it and into the main electronics enclosure
