Base station ethernet connection and power

Hello,

I typically use the basestation using a wired connection over the USB-C port, as I only have one wireless card in my PC and need an internet connection while operating the blue boat. However, recently the connection stopped working (I think due to saltwater intrusion). The port no longer shows up as an ethernet connection in the adapter settings, and will also no longer work as a charger.

Of course I assumed this was either a damaged cable or damaged port, so I replaced the cable (nothing) and then opened up the base-station to bypass the bulkhead and plug right into the USB hub. This also did not work. I am able to charge the base station by plugging the charger directly into the USB-C port on the PCB, but that requires me to open the base station. The base station still works wirelessly but I would prefer to connect using the wired connection, at least for charging.

The USB hub doesnt seem to be broken, as the indicator lights still turn on when things are plugged in and powered on. Is there some configuration in the hub that needs to be reset for the port to act as an ethernet port?

Thanks,

Sean

Hi @SeanMorgan,

Not sure what’s going wrong here, but if I’m understanding correctly it seems like at minimum the USB hub isn’t working, and maybe not the port either? As a starting point it may be helpful to try replacing the USB hub, before determining whether the port is also corrosion-damaged or similar.

There may be other helpful community suggestions, but if you’re after more dedicated BR support I’d recommend reporting this as a product problem

Thanks for the response! I will reach out to product support as well. I was just hoping to be able to find a somewhat easy fix. If I do replace the USB hub, do you happen to know what model it is? There are no manufacturer markings or product numbers on it that I can see.

Thanks!

Sean

Hi @SeanMorgan -

The USB hub is a custom product developed for the BaseStation! If you’ve damaged the USB port that connects to it, this is fundamentally different than the internal USB port - so the behavior you’re seeing is expected. The only fix is a replacement of the port and internal PCB - the support team should be able to help you with this!

Hello,

Thanks for the info. I have realized that I may not have the same version of Base Station as is currently used. The one I have has a fully separate USB hub inside it, whereas the replacement seems like a custom product with the cable integrated.

Hi @SeanMorgan -

Ah, yes - that is an earlier revision of the BaseStation. The USB-C bulkhead with those earlier units will charge when connected in both orientations, but only provide data when connected in one orientation - hence the included right-angle USB-C cable being included and used with a port that blocks the incorrect orientation. That is resolved in the newer units!
