Hi,
I have just acquired a ROV2 for my research and plan to capture some photogrammetry with a downward facing camera. The ROV has the Ping sonar fitted as an extra. I need to figure out the GPS situation for my research, however the Reef products with BlueRobotics are a little out my price range currently. Id love some advice on how to set up a surface GPS in the most cost-friendly way. Does this then work in conjunction with the ping sonar? Thanks
Hi @ChrisB_CNPS -
I assume you’re talking about using a standard GPS with the ROV at the surface? Cerulean Sonar makes a solution for this, but it is also fairly easy to DIY…. we’ve seen some users actually cram the antenna inside the standard 4” electronics enclosure, but it can be tough to get lock with this basically at the surface of the water - some height above it certainly helps things.
Generally, I don’t think an ROV is well suited for photogrammetry, compared to something like a BlueBoat towing a camera towfish - it has been a side project of mine to get such a setup working, as I think it will cover vastly more area with ease…
