GoPro video stream on blueboat

Hi all,

I am part of a research team currently setting up a blueboat.

We believe we have a solution for the hardware side, but haven’t managed to find anything on the technical side.

I was hoping I would be able to plug the GoPro straight to the raspberry pi and it would recognise it as a camera stream like our camera on the ROV, but it seems it is not the case

I know this is possible on the raspberry Pi directly, however I cannot figure out how/if it is possible to do through blueOS. Has anyone managed?

Cheers,
Blueb

Hi @Blueb -
Welcome to the forums!
I’m not sure I’ve seen modern go-pros support use on a Pi directly - can you share why you think this is a case? Some older models do support outputting the stream… but a lot of links for methods to do this are now dead-ends! This one still works, and depending on your camera, and if you can put the open gopro firmware on it, may be a solution for wireless use. Generally connecting via USB while keeping the camera waterproof can be quite challenging to do affordably - is this what you’ve already solved “for the hardware side” ? I bet the community would love to see your solution!

A USB camera like this one
is a great solution for a video stream, is already suppoted by BlueOS, and will soon have an extension where you can lower the bitrate and sol stream less data over the long-range wifi connection. It will also soon be available from BlueRobotics on the Reef!

Hi Tony, thanks for the reply

As for the hardware, a case like this paired with a penetrator back into the module should suffice.

As for the software side, I assumed because raspberry pis are plug and play with most webcams that it would be possible with modern GoPros, which can be forced into a webcam mode. If that is not the case I might be in for a lot more difficulty than expected! I will check out the GitHub you sent.

Thanks for the camera suggestion, regardless of if we can get a stream or not, we will likely have multiple GoPros attached so it would be good if we can get one of them streaming, if not we may have to go with that suggestion

Cheers,

I believe we have conceded and will simply use the camera you have suggested and have another GoPro that we can use to record a seperate video, which will be suitable for our use

Thanks!
