I’m wondering what the purpose of the hooks at the fathom tether spool is?
They make problems in usage because the cable entangles permanently during the spin off while the ROV is in operation. So I very often have to leave the car and manage the spool.
Maybe it is useful for something but I can’t find out for what.

I too strongly dislike this feature of the tether spool! It was put in place to provide a way to “lock off” the tether when the desired amount has been spooled out. Of course, this usually means that the entire tether gets yanked into the ocean!
You can use tape to cover the cutouts with some improvement to the situation. I’ve been tying a backup-line to the spool so it can’t run away if things do get caught after a recent mishap…
In this case, the cutouts were handy as they caught the tether, preventing the spool from unwinding as it was retrieved…
