ExploreHD unstable signal

Hey there,
I’m having trouble getting a stable signal from the ExploreHD when connecting to BlueROV2, whether there is another USB camera connected or not. The signal is either intermittent or can be stable for a while and then disappear. The cable passes through a Cobalt connector. When I connect the usb connector to a laptop instead of the Rpi4 (still going through the Cobalt) the signal is stable. So I’m wondering if its not having enough power going out from the Pi or some other known issue that can be solved?

Hi @odedezra -
The exploreHD camera + Raspberry Pi is incredibly sensitive to impedance on the USB data lines. Most computers, including laptops, are more tolerant and so can connect even when the Pi struggles with it.
Assuming your exploreHD is a newer camera, are the data lines inside the ROV still twisted tightly together and heat-shrinked? The Cobalt connector is likely the root cause - you installed it yourself? You could try twisting the data wires together further, but otherwise you may need to eliminate the Cobalt connector…

Hey Tony,

Actually further twisting the wires inside the enclosure gave the last needed touch, the signal seems way more stable now. I’ve had a similar issue in the past with another USB camera that produced no signal and I had to add a USB amplifier to make it work. But here only some twisting of the wires was needed apparently. Thanks for the tip!
