Dive Flag For ROV, Inland Lakes And Offshore

Does anyone use a diver flag when diving their ROV?

From years of scuba diving, I’ve always used one.

Hi @WAB8386 -

I’ve never heard of anyone doing so! When scuba diving they are often legally required, but can be a hazard in high traffic areas. With the ROV tether a potential hazard for other boat operators, I do typically put up a dive flag when operating from the boat, just so other vessels realize the potential for hazard around us.

Yes, I use one offshore, although mine doesn’t have a cable to follow - it isn’t an ROV and surfaces autonomously. The flag makes finding it much easier, particularly when the waves or wind is up. Also, it should prevent other boaters from hitting it.

My unit has enough weight and righting force to keep the flag vertical, even in 20 knot wind. I’m not sure about a typical ROV profile though, it might tend to roll and dip the flag a lot.
