What would be the best way to place thrusters on an ROV to get forward, reverse, vertical, horizontal and turning movement. I am trying to limit the amount of weight on my ROV so it i want to use < 6 thrusters.
The minimal way to do this is with two thrusters for forward/reverse/turning and a single thruster for vertical and a single thruster for horizontal lateral movement. This is the configuration used on most Seabotix LBV vehicles like this one:
