Designing pressure housings for small ROVs - looking for input

Hi everyone,

I’m based in New Zealand and have been working on building some small ROV components. I’ve got access to a lathe and I’m starting to design pressure housings.

Before I go too far, I wanted to ask—what are the biggest challenges you’ve had with pressure housings or sealing?

I’m currently thinking about things like O-ring sealing and possibly a bayonet-style end cap, but still very early stage and open to learning.

Also curious what sort of depth ratings people actually need in practice for small ROVs?

Appreciate any advice or things to watch out for :+1:

Have a look at the Parker O-ring Handbook, It’ll tell you the proper dimensions for O-ring groves, and It’ll even give you pressure ratings as well. when I was in school we had to learn how to find all this information here, or the Machinists Handbook, but now days you could probably put the PDF into Chat GBT and ask it what page to find your info on.

With the right input, anything is posable. you just need to define your goals, and work backwards to solve for X.

Good luck!
