I am making a deep-dive submersible with Bluerobotics watertight enclosure tubes. I need to find a way to attach deepsea foam (R-3318) onto the enclosure so it floats. I’m wondering what type of glue could withstand pressures of hundreds of meters underwater, and stick on to the aluminum enclosure. If glue isn’t ideal, how else can I reliably attach the foam onto the enclosure?
Hi @ABC123abc123
I would recommend against using glue with the foam and your enclosure - everything changes size a small amount under extreme pressures at depth!
Mechanically holding the foam is your best bet - you can drill holes through it, and bolt it with washers or an external plate. You could even use zip-ties in a pinch!
Thank you so much! Another question, Would zip-ties be able to withstand the pressure under extreme depths?
@ABC123abc123 only one way to find out!
As the nylon plastic won’t have any internal cavities, I don’t expect they would fail, but perhaps “squish” from the pressure could affect the zip-tie locking mechanism? Some good rope would likely work as a backup!
Ok Thank you! I will ask more questions if I come to any problems
