Cockpit sound not working on Steam Deck

I used a Steam Deck for the first time yesterday. The platform was truly great, but Cockpit sound notifications were missing. Using fresh install of latest stable version of cockpit.

Is there a setting either in Cockpit, or on the Steam Deck I need to apply?

Hey Marcus! Glad that you liked it.

Can you check on ā€˜/menu/settings/alerts’ if you have voice alerts enabled?

I usually have my voice alerts disabled, so there’s a chance that this is actually broken in the SteamDeck build and we never noticed. The FlatPak is a sandboxed type of image and every permission has to be set explicitly during build time, so there’s a chance we forgot to add this one. I’m gonna check.

Hi @rafael.lehmkuhl Voice alerts appear to be enabled, volume is up, nothing coming from the speakers

You got a bug!

I’ve tested here and it’s not working as well.

Did some investigation and we do need to explicitly set permissions for speech in Flatpak.

I will open a PR tomorrow fixing that for the next 1.18 beta.

@3dMB can you check your SteamOS version (Steam button, settings, system, OS version)?

OS version 3.7.21

OS Build 20260414.1

BIOS Version F7G0112

Correction - just had update come through…now using:

OS Version 3.7.22

OS Build 20260430.1

Still no sound notifications

Perfect. This version of SteamOS (3.7.13 and above) include the text-to-speech libraries that we need.

Download and install this Cockpit build and tell me if it fixes the problem.

To be able to download temporary releases (ā€œartifactsā€) from GitHub you need to be logged in, otherwise it will show you this 404.

In the meantime, I’ve uploaded the file to a Google Drive and you can download it here.

alas still no sound

Humn, ok, I will have to investigate a little more. I’m back home so I will test with my deck before making a new release. Thanks for testing it.
