Hello, we are a team looking to build an ROV for our university project. We are planning to have it scan for cracks and rusts in marine structures therefore we need a camera and a sensor or two. we were wondering if the ping360 can be used for crack detection. Thanks!
Hi @n3804 -
Welcome to the forums!
I would not expect a Ping360 to be that great for detecting cracks, at least in a metal ships hull. It may work well for detecting large rocks or gaps between them! Generally, as a sonar it’s best suited to finding objects at range. Learn more about sonars here!
Thank you for your reply! what type of sensor would you recommend for crack detection, if sonar isnt the best? Thanks again.
Hi @n3804 -
That seems like a tricky problem - perhaps a camera is best suited? A multibeam imaging sonar maaay work - you haven’t shared what size cracks you’re looking for, in what sort of material!
Multibeam and other normal sonars need big gaps, like at least 10 centimeters to be visible.
For checking of material thickness and cracks on ships, rigs and pipelines ultrasonic measurements are often used. Example of products:
the size is something that would be detected with a camera, our original plan was to have a camera + sensor, but looks like we will be sticking with just a camera. Might work on object detection too using YOLO. What do you think?
