I have used the blueboat on three hydro surveys. The first two were offshore and were successfully completed with autopilot. My last survey was in a marina and had a major failure. The boat was around 200 ft away, I again had a loss of communication but i was able to turn auto off and switch to manual. I then attempted to drive the boat back, but as soon as i pushed forward, the boat locked into forward, ran up a piling and flipped over. My GPS rover and computer system for data collection became submerged and lost around $10k of equipment. This seems like a major design flaw with the xbox controller. I tried to contact Blueboat but they don’t respond. Has anyone converted from the wifi xbox to a standard radio transmitter for boat control? My other autonomous boat can operate at long distances with this setup and is way more reactive.

In general, this wasn’t a problem with your xbox controller at all! It likely occurred due to a hiccup in communications between your control computer and the BlueBoat. We’re sorry to hear about your equipment, but in general it’s a good idea to make sure everything mounted to a BlueBoat can withstand a dunk!
