Latest Mac OS update broke the USB joystick

This issue is not really a BR issue, but I know there’s some really smart people on this forum.

It seems my Mac Mini did an OS update to OS27.01 yesterday and now the joystick does not show as connected. In doing some reading, it looks like this release has a ton of background security changes, none of which I can see related to accessories. In previous releases, a pop up asked to allow the accessory. That no longer is an option in OS27 from what I see.

Before I go through the task of wiping the disc and clean loading the previous version, I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this issue and found a fix.

Cheers,

Ken

Hi Ken -
I updated my m5 air to Tahoe and did not have any issues with the game controller. Are you still able to pair the Bluetooth device? Telling it to forget the hardware and asking it fresh, with game controller in pairing mode doesn’t work?
One potential solution may be using an AI tool like Claude code, and asking it to resolve your connectivity issue, may adjust the appropriate setting! A fresh install certainly doesn’t seem like it should be required…

Thanks Tony,

The version in it now is Golden Gate (27). Bluetooth devices attach ok. It seems to be USB attached devices. I’ve tried the Leo Bodnar BU0836X controller that I normally use, as well as a wireless Microsoft controller (with USB dongle) nothing…They’re listed in the USB section of the System report, but that’s as far as it goes.

I’ll check the AI for a solution.

In the progress of downgrading the OS…

Question: Are all the stand alone Cockpit screen layout settings stored on the local computer, or onboard the BlueOS in the vehicle?

Generally both, unless you’ve turned off vehicle synching

Might be too late, but I’m curious if it’s detectable in the browser, and/or with the latest Cockpit beta version? If Apple intentionally changed an API or something then it may be solved in more recent browser/Electron versions than the one included in the stable Cockpit release.

Unfortunately, I’m quite new to the Mac OS world. I did try to run a couple online gamepad test sites in Safari. Same thing, not controller detected.

I’m just creating the recovery disk, so nothings blown away yet…

Update:

I downgraded the OS to Tahoe (26) and the joystick came right back. With just a real quick test, it looks like I lost the button assignments, and the screen layout/widgets. But that’s a small price to pay to get functionality back.

Lesson earned: Turn off automatic OS updates in macOS, and stay with Tahoe!

Long day…

Ken

If you connect to the vehicle and then go to Settings / General in Cockpit’s sidebar menu and try to change the User, it’s possible your original user (with its views and joystick config) is still available
